JOURNEYS/EXPEDITION 02 / WALES

Wales by campervan: fourteen days from Eryri to the Gower.

The complete Worcestershire–Eryri–St Davids circuit: shorter drives than Scotland, more time pitched, a bus-served mountain day, four St Davids nights and a club-site spine down the entire west coast.

01 / MISSION PROFILE

All three Welsh national parks, without turning it into a race.

Wales is compact: the transits are short, so two-night bases and a four-night St Davids anchor leave real time on beaches and summits with a baby and Percy aboard. Route planned, not yet driven — this file will gain field notes after the wheels turn.

03 / JOURNEY LOG

Fourteen days. One unhurried Welsh arc.

North through Llangollen into Eryri, over the Menai to Anglesey, down the Cambrian coast to a four-night St Davids base, then the Gower and the empty Tywi valley for the run home.

04 / OPERATIONS BRIEFING

The details that keep the adventure easy.

Treat the St Davids block, the single-night Gower pitch and the mountain day as fixed points. Everything scenic around them can flex with weather, naps and the pace of the crew.

PRIMARY ASCENTBUS, NOT VAN
BDGSHERPA S2PYP

Beddgelert → Pen y Pass

Pen y Pass is the trailhead for the Miners' and Pyg Tracks, but its small car park is pre-booking only through the season and overnight campervan stays are not permitted in the National Park Authority car parks. Leave the Nebuchadnezzar pitched and ride the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus from Beddgelert instead — the S2 serves Pen y Pass directly, and Nant Peris park & ride covers a Llanberis start.

VEHICLE PROFILE

5.98M LENGTH
2.98M HEIGHT
2.11M WIDTH

Coastal car parks in Wales frequently use height barriers — check before committing, and use campsite directions rather than the sat-nav on final approaches.

CREW RHYTHM

One major objective per half-day.

The best days leave room for feeds, dog breaks, weather changes and unplanned beaches. St Davids day 10 is intentionally unscheduled — protect it.

ROUTE CAUTIONSkip the Abergwesyn mountain road (the Devil's Staircase) between Tregaron and Rhandirmwyn in this itinerary.

Its single-track hairpins are no place for a 6-metre automatic. The A40 approach through Llandovery still delivers the full Tywi valley.

05 / UK ACCESS STACK

The same wallet, pointed west.

The permanent seven-membership stack from Expedition 01 carries straight into Wales — with one important difference: state heritage here is Cadw, not English Heritage, and the reciprocal terms matter. Carry physical cards; admission, booking and parking rules vary by organisation and property.

CADW × ENGLISH HERITAGERECIPROCAL

The castle key

English Heritage members get half-price entry to Cadw sites in the first membership year and free entry after the first renewal. On this route that covers Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Harlech — three of Edward I's World Heritage ring.

NATIONAL TRUSTDIRECT

Wales is home turf

NT operates directly in Wales — no reciprocal needed. Stackpole and Barafundle, Rhossili and Worm's Head, Dinefwr and Dolaucothi Gold Mines are all on this route, and NT car parks are free with the card. Note: NT membership does not cover Cadw sites.

RSPBWILDLIFE

Puffins and kites

South Stack on Anglesey, the Ramsey Island boat from St Justinians and the Gwenffrwd-Dinas kite country boardwalk — the RSPB layer earns its place three times on one circuit.

CLUB NETWORKSNIGHT BASES

C&MC + C&CC spine

Three of the six bases on this route are club sites — St Davids and Rhandirmwyn (Camping and Caravanning Club) and Cae Mawr on Anglesey (Caravan and Motorhome Club) — with member rates and the certificated-site networks as backup.

FORESTS + GARDENSKNOW THE GAP

England's passes stop at the border

Forestry England membership does not cover Wales — forest car parks here are run by Natural Resources Wales and mostly pay-per-visit. RHS partner gardens and free Woodland Trust woods still apply for garden stops and Percy's decompression walks.

DASHBOARDFULL STACK

Run the numbers

The complete seven-membership dashboard — coverage, reciprocals and official links — now lives on the Journeys page, and the optimiser prices the whole stack against your actual plans.

06 / EXPEDITION TOOLKIT

The cover, the shortcuts and the dog-walk wildcard.

The installed app deck is broad enough to cross-check pitches, navigation and live conditions. Use it as a layered toolkit—not as permission to ignore campsite arrival instructions, signs or local access rules.

DOG WALK / FLEX LAYERNO MEMBERSHIP NEEDED

Woodland Trust woods

A useful extra layer for Percy: Woodland Trust woods are free to visit, and its directory can surface short decompression walks around transit days.

  • Search near the next fuel, lunch or overnight stop rather than forcing another major attraction into the day.
  • Check each wood page for parking, livestock, seasonal work and path conditions.
  • Follow local signs and the Trust's responsible dog-walking guidance.

07 / DEPARTURE CHECK

Ready the landship.

A short final check now prevents the unglamorous problems from hijacking the first few days.

CHECK 01ROOF

Canvas clear, locked, verified

Pull the elevating-roof canvas clear, lower, twist-lock and physically check it — every departure, no exceptions.

CHECK 02PAYLOAD

Weigh the real expedition

Load exactly as you intend to tour and visit a weighbridge. The automatic's 370 kg must absorb crew, Percy, water and every bag — check total and axle weights.

CHECK 03GAS + WATER

Systems set for transit

Gas bottle off at the internal cupboard shut-off, fresh tank part-filled for arrival, waste and cassette empty, water heater drained down if frost threatens.

CHECK 04POWER

Leisure battery green

Battery charged, solar clean and reporting, hook-up cable, adaptors and USB leads aboard. Run the off-grid calculator for the no-hook-up nights.

CHECK 05CREW + PERCY

Restraints rigged

Child seat installation confirmed on the belted travel seats, and Percy's crash-tested harness or crate anchored on the activity deck — Highway Code rule 57.

CHECK 06DOCUMENTS

Cards and cover to hand

Licences, insurance app signed in and cached, C&MC and C&CC membership cards, heritage cards, boat-trip confirmations and the Travel Passport checklist run.

08 / OPEN MAP

Browse Wales from home base.

The map opens on Worcester at a whole-country scale — the border is twenty minutes from the drive. Pan, zoom and search freely; this is a planning surface, not a fixed route.
