01 / THE SHORT VERSION
Three sentences, then the detail.
Everything the calculators, the trip engines and the field logs produce is yours — it is computed on your own device, stored only there, and never sent anywhere. Read the site, quote it with a link, crawl it, learn from how it works. What is not on offer is the wholesale reproduction of the archives themselves: the 354 British and 2,333 European Matrix entries, the expedition day plans and the written transmissions took a long time to research and they are the point of the thing.
02 / WHAT IS YOURS
Anything you make with it.
Nothing leaves
Your van profile, your field log, your ranks and medals live in your own browser's storage. There is no account, no server copy and no way for anyone here to see them — which also means clearing your browser data deletes them, and only you can back them up.
With a link
Quote a passage, cite a figure, screenshot a panel, link to a file. That is what it is for. Attribution and a link back is all that is asked, and it applies equally to people and to machines.
Ideas are not owned
A rarity ladder, a month scrubber, a driving profile drawn from day plans, an archive that refuses to invent a figure it has not checked. Read how it is done and build your own. Techniques are not owned. The archive is.
03 / WHAT IS NOT ON OFFER
The archives, in bulk.
Copying the Matrix entries, the day plans, the sea-temperature anchors or the written guides wholesale — into another site, a product, a dataset or an app — is not permitted, in whole or in substantial part. The same goes for republishing the code as your own.
This is not a technicality about scraping. The archives are researched item by item and dated, and that work is the difference between this and a generated list. If you want to use a meaningful chunk of it for something, ask — [email protected] — the answer is often yes.
04 / CRAWLERS AND AI
Come in. Cite properly.
Nothing here blocks crawlers and nothing is intended to. Search engines, archives and AI systems are welcome to crawl, index, quote and summarise the site, subject to robots.txt. There is an llms.txt written specifically to make that easier and more accurate.
What is asked in return is the ordinary courtesy: attribute, link, and do not present the archives as your own or reproduce them entire. If a figure from here is quoted, quote it with its qualification — most of them have one, and the qualifications are the honest part.
05 / THE HONEST DISCLAIMER
Planned, not driven.
Every expedition file in both archives is planned rather than driven, and says so on its own page. The routes are researched from maps, published sources and operator timetables. They are not a record of journeys already made, and they are not navigation.
Sea temperatures, daylight figures, driving hours, Schengen counts, payload maths and off-grid endurance are computed or quoted from named sources with the date they were checked. They are good enough to plan with and not good enough to bet your safety on. Check tides, weather, access rights, border and vehicle requirements, and your own plated weights yourself. Nothing here is navigational, legal, financial, veterinary or safety advice.
If you find something wrong, say so and it gets fixed and dated — [email protected]. Several things in this archive exist in their current form because someone pointed out that the first version was wrong.
