Wales is compact: the transits are short, so two-night bases and a four-night St Davids anchor leave real time on beaches and summits with a baby and Percy aboard. Route planned, not yet driven — this file will gain field notes after the wheels turn.

03 / JOURNEY LOG
Fourteen days. One unhurried Welsh arc.
North through Llangollen into Eryri, over the Menai to Anglesey, down the Cambrian coast to a four-night St Davids base, then the Gower and the empty Tywi valley for the run home.

Short shakedown leg. Walk the old railway line into town and see the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct — a World Heritage canal in the sky — with Castell Dinas Brân above the site.
NIGHT / LLANDYN, LLANGOLLENLlangollen → Beddgelert Forest
Into Eryri via Betws-y-Coed and Capel Curig. Pitch among the trees at Beddgelert Forest; the village, river and Welsh Highland Railway are on the doorstep.
NIGHTS 2–3 / BEDDGELERT FORESTYr Wyddfa mountain day
The van never moves. Ride the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus to Pen y Pass for the Miners' Track, or take the mountain railway option from Llanberis. Full briefing below.

Caernarfon Castle (Cadw) on the way, then over the Menai Strait to the island. Base near Benllech and Red Wharf Bay for two nights.
NIGHTS 4–5 / CAE MAWR C&MCAnglesey day
RSPB South Stack cliffs and lighthouse, Beaumaris Castle (Cadw), and Newborough forest and beach with Llanddwyn Island at low tide.
BASE / CAE MAWR C&MCAnglesey → Barmouth
Back over the Menai and down the Cambrian coast: Porthmadog, Harlech Castle (Cadw) on its rock, then the Mawddach estuary into Barmouth for a seafront night.
NIGHT 6 / HENDRE MYNACH, BARMOUTHBarmouth → St Davids
The long transit of the trip: Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and the Ceredigion coast road to Britain's smallest city. Four nights, sea views from the pitch.
NIGHTS 7–10 / ST DAVIDS C&CCSt Davids peninsula
Cathedral morning, then Whitesands Bay and the coast path. Abereiddi's Blue Lagoon is walkable from the site; Porthgain's harbour makes the lunch stop.

In puffin season — roughly April to July — book a Skomer landing from Martin's Haven, or an RSPB Ramsey Island crossing from St Justinians. Boats book out — reserve early.

Intentionally unscheduled — the Skye rule applies. Fair: Stackpole and Barafundle Bay (NT). Foul: Oriel y Parc, Solva harbour and a fireside pub. Protect it.

East past Carmarthen to the Gower peninsula. Pitch overlooking Three Cliffs Bay, then the evening run to Rhossili and the Worm's Head viewpoint (NT).
NIGHT 11 / THREE CLIFFS BAYGower → Tywi valley
North through Llandeilo — Dinefwr (NT) and Carreg Cennen castle sit either side — into the empty upper Tywi valley below Llyn Brianne.
NIGHTS 12–13 / RHANDIRMWYN C&CCRed kite country
RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas riverside boardwalk, the Llyn Brianne dam viewpoint, and the NT's Dolaucothi Gold Mines twenty minutes away at Pumsaint.
BASE / RHANDIRMWYN C&CCTywi valley → home
Llandovery, the Brecon road and a Hay-on-Wye bookshop stop, then the border country back to Worcestershire. Unpack, weigh the lessons, file the field notes.

Treat the St Davids block, the single-night Gower pitch and the mountain day as fixed points. Everything scenic around them can flex with weather, naps and the pace of the crew.

Beddgelert → Pen y Pass
Pen y Pass is the trailhead for the Miners' and Pyg Tracks, but its small car park is pre-booking only through the season and overnight campervan stays are not permitted in the National Park Authority car parks. Leave the Nebuchadnezzar pitched and ride the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus from Beddgelert instead — the S2 serves Pen y Pass directly, and Nant Peris park & ride covers a Llanberis start.

Coastal car parks in Wales frequently use height barriers — check before committing, and use campsite directions rather than the sat-nav on final approaches.

One major objective per half-day.
The best days leave room for feeds, dog breaks, weather changes and unplanned beaches. St Davids day 10 is intentionally unscheduled — protect it.
ROUTE CAUTIONSkip the Abergwesyn mountain road (the Devil's Staircase) between Tregaron and Rhandirmwyn in this itinerary.
Its single-track hairpins are no place for a 6-metre automatic. The A40 approach through Llandovery still delivers the full Tywi valley.
05 / UK ACCESS STACK
The same wallet, pointed west.
The permanent seven-membership stack from Expedition 01 carries straight into Wales — with one important difference: state heritage here is Cadw, not English Heritage, and the reciprocal terms matter. Carry physical cards; admission, booking and parking rules vary by organisation and property.
The castle key
English Heritage members get half-price entry to Cadw sites in the first membership year and free entry after the first renewal. On this route that covers Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Harlech — three of Edward I's World Heritage ring.
Wales is home turf
NT operates directly in Wales — no reciprocal needed. Stackpole and Barafundle, Rhossili and Worm's Head, Dinefwr and Dolaucothi Gold Mines are all on this route, and NT car parks are free with the card. Note: NT membership does not cover Cadw sites.
Puffins and kites
South Stack on Anglesey, the Ramsey Island boat from St Justinians and the Gwenffrwd-Dinas kite country boardwalk — the RSPB layer earns its place three times on one circuit.
C&MC + C&CC spine
Three of the six bases on this route are club sites — St Davids and Rhandirmwyn (Camping and Caravanning Club) and Cae Mawr on Anglesey (Caravan and Motorhome Club) — with member rates and the certificated-site networks as backup.
England's passes stop at the border
Forestry England membership does not cover Wales — forest car parks here are run by Natural Resources Wales and mostly pay-per-visit. RHS partner gardens and free Woodland Trust woods still apply for garden stops and Percy's decompression walks.

Weigh the real expedition
Load exactly as you intend to tour and visit a weighbridge. The automatic's 370 kg must absorb crew, Percy, water and every bag — check total and axle weights.
Systems set for transit
Gas bottle off at the internal cupboard shut-off, fresh tank part-filled for arrival, waste and cassette empty, water heater drained down if frost threatens.
Leisure battery green
